10 tips for flare ups

Flare ups may last for a day, a week, or longer. So here are a few tips to cope with the pain during those tough times.

  1. Wear loose clothing with breathable fabric. Consider the clothing items that tend to make you uncomfortable - it could be thongs, tight pants, or certain fabric textures.

  2. Avoid alcohol and try to limit your caffeine intake. Everyone responds differently, but during a flare up of vaginal pain it is always a good idea to be extra careful of what you are putting in your system. Hydrate yourself instead, and drink loads of water! Add some lemons to make it exciting?? idk doing my best here guys.

  3. Get more sleep if your schedule permits it! Pain can take its toll on your energy levels - getting in some extra rest is probably a good idea!

  4. Do a fun task that will keep your mind busy but your body relaxed. This could mean reading your favourite book, doing a puzzle, starting an art project, or meditation!

  5. Cold or hot compress - depending on where your pain is located! During vaginal flare ups I found a cold cloth to provide relief. For my back pain, I use my heating pad!

  6. Get some fresh air! In the summertime I have often walked to the park and lied down on the grass, letting the breeze blow over me. Your vulva could use a little fresh air too sometimes 😏

  7. Spend time with someone that makes you laugh. Distraction at its finest!

  8. Medication. Take a double check at what treatment you have been on - have you been taking it regularly? Do you need to book a follow up with your doctor?

  9. Essential Oils. I don’t go anywhere without my peppermint oil, even though it does not eliminate pain, it creates another sensation on the body to focus on. I apply it on my lower back, and neck!

  10. Give yourself a break. Flare ups are not a fault of your own. Listen to your body and give it what it needs.
